Up by 8:30, early for a Saturday; did the chores, showered and washed my hair so we could roll out by 10:30 to do a meat delivery to the city. We stopped and visited the house; the drywall is going up. Made it to the city with plenty of time to drop meat off at [...]
Local niçoise but without the salad!
A couple weeks ago my sister and I went to visit Anna et al., and Anna, as she generally does, prepared a lovely, simple, fresh, delicious meal — this time it was a niçoise-based salad, with arugula, boiled new potatoes, blanched green beans, hard-boiled eggs, the little black niçoise [...]
For the past few lunches, and today’s dinner, I have had a delightful meal of homemade homegrown chicken-liver pâté on a Macrina baguette, eaten with some homemade pickled garlic scapes and an apple from the tree outside friend Anne’s new house.
I usually eyeball the measurements and season it to taste, but here is the recipe [...]
Last weekend my sister was here and we went out to dinner at Hitchcock with G. and my sister’s boyfriend R. I had a pork chop, which, at Hitchcock, actually equals two pork chops stuck together. It was amazing and delicious and I couldn’t finish it, so I brought my remaining pork chop nubbin home. [...]
My current cook-like-you’re-single favorite meal is:
2 oz penne or similar fat pasta (not spaghetti), cooked
~1 Tbsp diced local shallot
1 can locally-fished albacore tuna
buncha capers from the organic capers jar in the fridge, plus caper juice
as many homegrown tomatoes as seems appropriate, chopped
a big drizzle of olive oil
s&p as usual
Combine in bowl after you put [...]
We processed chickens last weekend and on Sunday night we did a simple salt-and-pepper, butter-basted roast chicken (425º until done). Today G. fried up some homegrown, homecured bacon, then warmed slices of the Sunday chicken breast in the same pan after draining it (pan, not breast). Layered onto Macrina herb buns with just-picked garden tomato, [...]
Mostly-homegrown party time! By “party” I mean just me and G. having dinner as usual.
Kitsap-grown flank steak, from our freezer cow (thanks cow), more or less following the Simply Recipes version.
OK, I typed the above nine days ago, and I don’t remember what all I was planning to say. But I suspect that [...]
G. was in bed sick before I even got home, but I made myself some fish tacos as originally planned anyway.
I grilled some Pike Place Market mahi mahi — I usually use halibut cheeks but they were out and the guy said mahi mahi was a good fish taco fish — with a rub [...]
We have had three lovely evenings (and a lunch) of eating out with G’s dad and stepmom, who are visiting us and the PNW. For dinner, we had a chef’s tasting at Hitchcock on Friday, which was amazing as usual; a very pleasant sushi dinner at Shima Sushi on Saturday; and then back at Hitchcock [...]
We had a difficult-yet-good couples therapy appointment from 4:30-5:30. I suggested we walk around the block afterwards and then after that I thought maybe we should go on a small date. We ended up at the counter of Hitchcock again, where we each had a Hitchcock Martini (this month it’s gin, cardamom bitters, and some [...]
