with the collar up so you won’t catch a cold

Tuesday, 27 January, 2004

about two and a half miles today in about twenty-five minutes. not too bad considering this is only the second or third time i’ve gone running since early in winter break. i think i am going to do a 5k in february — this is good because not only does it make me and my single-issueness happy, but it will make me run in order to prepare. yay.
now: banana and v-8. mm, tomato.
my friend andi needs money for her MS walk. you should give her some. (you should also save some for me for if i do the 5k.)
who i want to win the oscars: bill murray for best actor. keisha castle-hughes for best actress. i don’t know if i want return of the king or lost in translation to win for best picture, but i definitely want sofia coppola to win best director. this is the first time an american woman has been nominated. how is that possible?
the goal for today is to finish my dumb database lab and start the vocabulary thing. starting the vocab was the goal yesterday too. i think borrowing sho’s gamecube for the week was a bad plan, at least this week.

it’s almost everything i need

Monday, 26 January, 2004

i am supposed to be reading chapter three of the IFLA functional requirements for bibliographic records, but instead i am looking at sewing patterns on ebay. obviously this is more important.
i am having a hard time typing because i attempted to amputate the tip of my finger with my pocket knife as i was opening a bag of peanut butter m&ms in the car in the dark. smart girl.
other than that i had a good weekend. eugene is small and flat and there is a lot of room between the buildings, but it is still nice to go back. a little weird, but nice. also today i learned that contrary to what i thought about the pay schedule and winter break and when i worked, i did actually get paid, so i got to go to the grocery store and buy lettuce and broccoli and yogurt and apples. hooray!

down beneath the impossible pain of our history

Thursday, 22 January, 2004

happy roe v. wade day!
it is the 31st anniversary today! don’t forget to support the freedom of choice act and to be wary of the unborn victims of violence act!

this would only be an experiment …

today i feel like this:
BLAH.
also kind of like this:
WHAT THE HELL AM I DOING?.
if i could go running (it’s too cold and dark and i have too much to do) or get some pizza or sushi or eggplant burger (i don’t have any dollars), i would feel better. instead i shall have to have a baked potato with broccoli and cheese, and perhaps also have some grilled cheese sammich. then i shall do more laundry and maybe do my reading and then go to bed, where i shall be cold and grumpy and still blah.
although now that i am thinking about it, perhaps baked potato is my friend too and being potatoful will make me less icky.
next time i will try to be more interesting to read.

everything sticks until it goes away

lots of birds were chirping on the way home from school today. and yesterday i found gasworks park on my run and there were those tiny daisies that grow in the grass in springtime. i don’t know their name. in french they are called paquerelles because they bloom around easter (pâques) but apparently they are early this year. i love the tiny daisies.
this weekend our apartment was full of girls and alcohol. it was fun and loud and girly, with cosmo and bridal magazines and our bodies, ourselves. now it is tuesday again, which means i get to watch the state of the union tonight, and that soon it is the weekend.

made me feel so right at home

Thursday, 15 January, 2004

there is a picture of me, and i do not hate it. this is very unusual. this is perhaps because sho is a good photographer. he also took a picture of a little broccoli flower standing up on the counter. why was it doing that?

elle est fatigante, désésperante, souriante, affligeante, énervante

Wednesday, 14 January, 2004

it is raining. that means it is surprise umbrella day. but even friend umbrella is not helping me be in a good mood. rhett miller on my mp3 player helped a little. he is my friend. i bet eating some food would help too, but food is at home, and i am at work.
this is the least interesting post ever.
the moral of the story is that i am grumpy and it is raining but baby duck is here and is fuzzy so maybe i will get better.
ps. oh yeah i forgot to say that the other day i got to write a letter giving permission to use one of our images … to ken burns! for a movie! hooray!

(song: “fatigante,” louise attaque. there are some more positive adjectives in there but i left them out.)

‘cos i can’t believe what i found

Monday, 12 January, 2004

it will be an incoherent post today, as i have nothing to say but my “fans” seem to be clamoring for … something? i think you all just have too much free time. go read a book! sheesh.
=)
so. the president of the american libraries association won a ms. woman of the year award. this is cool. also, look at the url on the “won” link. the ala has some serious problems with their links. it would be comical if it weren’t amazingly annoying, and also stupid, coming from an institution whose main goal is to make information more accessible.
i have obtained an altoids-style tin from shannon, and i want to make something out of it. i think a little thing into which to put my id and card and money and also things i carry in my pockets, like change and pocket knife and such. then i can use it when i do not have pockets. but my cell phone does not fit into it so maybe i should make something else out of it. or maybe i should just get some more tins and make that as well as some other things. does anyone have an altoid addiction and want to get rid of the tins?
this weekend i accomplished absolutely nothing. it was really nice. well, ok, not entirely true. i accomplished some things. i watched star trek. i had hot chocolate. i had half a bottle of two buck chuck. (two buck chuck is in the news!) watched part of alien resurrection on tv. it has fish lips man from amélie (and practically every other jeunet)! i like fish lips man. he makes me laugh. unfortunately imdb has no pictures of him but perhaps when i say “fish lips man from amélie” you all know exactly who i mean.
(! i just noticed he is from saumur which is super close to angers! cool.)
i worked for many hours today but i did not eat lunch or breakfast so now i am not letting myself go running, because it might make me fall over. this might mean i have to go running tomorrow afternoon. or it might not.
oh, and i sewed a little bag! i forgot to mention that last week i think. anyway my little cute sewing machine sewed me a little bag. next — after i go to the fabric store, anyway — i think i will sew some pillows. does anyone need any pillows?
now i have to read about Database Systems: Design, Implementation and Management! arr!

there’s battlescars on my face and my arms

Wednesday, 7 January, 2004

when i got back to work on monday after three weeks off, i discovered that i now have an inbox! i have always wanted an inbox so i was happy. it was especially nice since i had just that morning dreamed that i was fired because my desk was too messy. when i woke up i realized that was extremely silly, because my desk is nowhere near the messiest. if they fired everyone with a messy desk, there would be no one left but shan.
however, today my inbox joy faded when i discovered i messed up an order for the first time. she ordered 21414 and i gave her 21413. now the department has to pay for three 16×20 prints. hmph.
also, much as i dislike snow, i have found that i appreciate slush even less. in fact, you might say that I HATE IT. there was about five inches of snow last night; today it is giant puddles of gross muddy snow-water at every corner, so i have to cross the street in the middle of the block to avoid it. it had better be all gone by tomorrow morning! or else! gr!
one of my classes yesterday was cancelled but i still have a billion tons of reading to go so i had better get started on it. i didn’t buy my books for class before i left for break and now a required text is sold out from the bookstore, and they don’t know when it will be in. so i can’t do that part, but there is a bunch of stuff online too so i am not totally off the hook.
ok. off to NOT play torment. i am going to do my reading! yes i am!

(song: “battlescars,” ozma. yes, i know, there should be a [sic] in the title, but i thought that would look kind of dumb.)
